The insatiable bandwidth demands of AI training clusters and large-scale cloud infrastructure are driving rapid adoption of 400 Gigabit Ethernet, with 800GbE on the near horizon. Upgrading data center networks to these speeds requires careful planning across optics, cabling, switch silicon, and cooling infrastructure.

Deployment Considerations for High-Speed Ethernet

400GbE deployments primarily use QSFP-DD and OSFP transceiver form factors with various reach options: SR8 for short-reach multimode fiber, DR4 for 500-meter single-mode runs, and FR4 for 2-kilometer campus connections. The choice of optic directly impacts cabling infrastructure requirements and per-port costs.

Switch silicon from Broadcom (Memory BCM78900 series), Intel/Barefoot (Tofino), and custom ASIC designs from hyperscalers determine the features available at 400GbE speeds. Programmable switch ASICs enable advanced telemetry, in-network computing, and custom load balancing algorithms that optimize AI training collective communication patterns.

The transition to 800GbE will leverage the same fiber infrastructure through PAM4 modulation at higher baud rates and increased lane counts. Organizations investing in single-mode fiber and structured cabling today are best positioned for 800GbE adoption, as multimode fiber's distance limitations become more constraining at each speed increase.
