Modern Load Balancing: From HAProxy to Cloud-Native Solutions

Load balancing has evolved significantly from simple round-robin distribution to sophisticated traffic management encompassing health checking, circuit breaking, rate limiting, and protocol-aware routing. Load Balancing Architectures

HAProxy and Nginx remain dominant for self-managed load balancing, offering high performance, extensive configurability, and mature ecosystems. HAProxy's transparent proxying and advanced health checking make it ideal for TCP and HTTP workloads, while Nginx's integrated web server capabilities suit architectures that combine reverse proxying with static content serving.

Cloud-native load balancers like AWS ALB, Azure Application Gateway, and Google Cloud Load Balancing integrate deeply with their respective platforms, offering features like Web Application Firewall integration, automatic certificate management, and container-aware target groups. These managed services eliminate operational overhead at the cost of vendor specificity.
