Regular automated backups are non-negotiable for hosting servers. Both cPanel and Plesk provide built-in backup tools that, when properly configured, protect against data loss from hardware failures, software bugs, and human error.
Backup Configuration Best Practices
Configure cPanel's backup system to run incremental backups daily and full backups weekly. Store backups on a separate partition or remote server鈥攏ever on the same disk as the data being backed up. Use the backup transport feature to push backups to Amazon S3 or a remote FTP server.
Plesk's scheduled backup manager supports full and incremental server-level, reseller-level, and subscription-level backups. Configure rotation policies to retain daily backups for seven days, weekly backups for a month, and monthly backups for a year.
Test your backup restoration process regularly. A backup that cannot be restored is worthless. Schedule quarterly restoration drills on a test server to verify backup integrity and ensure your team is familiar with the recovery procedures under pressure.
